Auto recycler finds salvage worth selling - NWITimes.com

Posted: 22 Aug 2009 09:41 PM PDT

HAMMOND | Northlake Auto Recyclers owner Marty Hollingshead credits his success in business to hard work and good luck, even though it was an automobile accident in the early 1970s led him to land his first job at an automotive yard.

About 10 years later, Hollingshead took over a struggling automotive business near the state line and built it into a $5 million-a-year automotive recycling and parts retail enterprise. He will celebrate his 25th year of owning the business next month -- and his big plans are to "lace my boots and go to work."

Northlake Auto Recyclers sells automotive parts including motors, transmissions, tires, doors, front ends and taillights. Seventy-five percent of Hollingshead's business is with repair shops, dealerships and other recyclers, and individual buyers represent the remaining 25 percent.

Hollingshead, 53, said he buys vehicles in all conditions, although he focuses on gleaning parts from vehicles in the 2002 model year and newer. He said he has paid amounts ranging from $200 to $10,000 to purchase vehicles from automotive auctions so that Northlake can harvest automotive parts.

About 1,500 vehicles each year are dismantled and vehicles bought for salvage have their fluids drained and are dismantled for certain parts. Then they are stored before they are placed in a car crusher.

Once customers order parts from the business, they are pulled from inventory where they are analyzed and checked for defects and prepared for delivery. One of Northlake's goals is to give customers prompt service and attempt to get them their order in one business day, Hollingshead said.

Hollingshead said it's a fight to convince people that selling automotive parts isn't a dirty business. The yard doesn't emit smells of burning rubber or have unkempt stacks of rusted-out, crushed cars and trucks littering his 18-acre yard. Motors and transmissions are stacked neatly on long shelves.

Northlake employee Debbie Hussey said the business has strived to be a good environmental partner long before regulators including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began cracking down on automotive yards.

Tasks such as draining fluids is serious business at Northlake. Hollingshead said a proper vehicle fluid evacuation takes longer than 30 minutes and spent fluids are stored in closed containers and placed in nonleaking basins per environmental regulations. Hussey said the company is self-reporting its environmental tasks to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management in an automotive salvage yard monitoring program.

While being profitable is the business' main objective, Hussey said if you leave the environment in disrepair, you are negatively impacting current and future generations.

"We try to project a good image for Hammond (and) a good image for the community," Hollingshead said. "We try to run a good shop. The problem is you see (other) yards and they're pig sties. That's the impression that you get."

Hollingshead said he expects sales to be steady in 2009 compared to a year earlier. Business is usually strongest in the first quarter of the year because inclement weather usually requires more auto repairs to be done.

A consultant told him a few years ago that he should be doing $10 million worth of business with Northlake's available manpower and land, but he said that his primary focuses are being able to service customers efficiently and pay his employees a decent living wage.

"I'm not concerned with size," Hollingshead said. "I'm concerned with how we deal with our customers."

In 2007 and 2008, Hollingshead said he resisted the urge to purchase his own car crusher when prices for scrap steel were at record levels. Scrap processors can generate cash by selling crushed cars and trucks to steel industry sources. He said he didn't want to increase his personal property taxes and he believed that he didn't do enough business to make the scrap sales cost effective.

Locator UpFront, an industry magazine for used auto and truck parts businesses, named Hollingshead as "Boss of the Year" in 2008. Hollingshead said he was indifferent about the notoriety, but was honored because his employees and peers nominated him.

Assembly systems noticed - Detroit Free Press

Posted: 23 Aug 2009 12:19 AM PDT

After spending more than two years to develop a new assembly system for engines and transmissions, tooling automation company Comau Inc. has a product that is drawing interest from automotive and commercial vehicle manufacturers.

Diesel engine manufacturer Perkins Engines Co. has purchased one of the systems for its plant in Peterborough, England, and Ford Motor Co. is evaluating it, said Ted Brown, vice president and general manager of Comau's powertrain division.

Brown said a team of about 12 engineers in Southfield developed the system, which assembles engines and transmission components in about half the space and at lower cost than traditional methods.

Comau, a subsidiary of Italy-based Fiat Group SpA, spent more than $1 million developing the technology and began marketing it about six months ago.

"Now we really look forward to selling hundreds of these," Brown said.

He declined to say how much its SmartCell costs, saying it varies depending on how many functions a customer wants it to perform.

SmartCell is just one of many manufacturing systems sold by Comau, which serves the automotive, aerospace, commercial vehicle and agricultural industries.

"One thing we've been trying to do is diversify geographically, and it's helped us out through these tough times," Brown said.

Comau's Southfield office has recently landed contracts in China with Caterpillar Inc., Chery Automobile Co. and General Motors Co.

Also, Ford Motor Co., one of Comau's primary automotive clients, is retooling several of its plants, including assembly operations in Cuautitlan, Mexico, and Wayne.

What's more, Comau, which is 100% owned by Fiat Group, is well-positioned to bid on business with Chrysler as Fiat brings its small cars to some of Chrysler's plants in the United States.

Brent Kelso, Comau's director of sales and marketing, said Comau will have to bid on the work for Fiat along with competitors such as ABB Group and ThyssenKrupp Technologies.

"Fiat Group is really a holding company, and Fiat auto operates very independently," Kelso said. "So, we don't have any special insight."

Paper-pushing notary turns clunker killer - Shreveport Times

Posted: 22 Aug 2009 11:50 PM PDT

(2 of 2)

Asked how he felt, Owens said, "I'm watching a good engine die."

He shook his head and looked at his watch while the engine purr turned to a slower growl.

"There's going to be one less hot rod," Owens said. He smiled at Wells, who was watching the event from a few feet away.

The "check engine" light popped on after four minutes.

Another minute later, the engine sounded ruffled but was still running.

"It's fighting. It's fighting," Owens said.

He kept revving the engine.

About seven minutes in, the engine made loud, ugly knocks.

The noise and the burning stench in the air disappeared soon after. The engine was dead.

"She's a goner," Owens said.

Owens tried to start the engine three times. Not a sound.

Owens climbed out of the truck, filled out some paperwork and put a sticker on the engine.

"This engine is from a vehicle that is part of the Car Allowance Rebate System. It has significant internal damage caused by operating the engine with a sodium silicate solution instead of oil," the sticker states.

Owens said the wrecking service All Star Automotive uses tows the clunkers to Pull-A-Part, a service junkyard in Baton Rouge.

All Star Automotive, which has about 200 clunkers at all eight of its dealerships in the greater Baton Rouge area, has a contract with Pull-A-Part. Once there, the parts that can be sold will be sold and then the service yard will crush the clunkers, Owens said.

Because of federal rules, the junkyards have 180 days from receipt of the clunkers to crush or shred the vehicles.

Officials at Pull-A-Part could not be reached for comment.

Because the program began at the end of July, it's too soon for any of the clunkers to be crushed yet, said Ken Ross, manager of the LKQ Service Yard in Port Allen.

Ross said his yard has a contract to buy clunkers from Bryan Harris Chevrolet in Baton Rouge.

There are 12 clunkers at the Port Allen yard and Ross said he is expecting another 25 to come in during the next two weeks.

Customers have been visiting LKQ to pull the parts off the clunkers they want, Ross said.

Crushing a clunker, Ross said, will only take about five minutes.

Wells said he has definitely seen his business increase since the CARS program began.

"I haven't had my new inventory this low since the 1980s," Wells said.
