Saturn Provides 2009 Black Aura Hybrid for U.S. Rep. David Price’s ... - PR.com

Raleigh, NC, August 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Bill Shotwell, general manager and owner of Saturn of Raleigh (www.saturnofraleigh.com) and Saturn of Cary (www.saturnofcary.com), has announced that the dealerships provided a 2009 black Aura Hybrid to Wake Tech Community College on Aug. 27 for U.S. Rep. David Price's tour of the college's automotive systems program. Wake Tech's Automotive Systems Technology program, as well as its Simulation and Game Development program, is slated to receive $200,000 in the proposed 2010 federal budget. Rep. Price, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, was a sponsor of the request for the appropriations, and his visit to Wake Tech allowed him to see how the federal funds will be utilized to enhance the programs. With the goal of establishing a Green Automotive degree program, Wake Tech's Automotive Technologies program will use federal funding to develop coursework in alternative fuels, hybrids and electric car technologies.

The four-wheel drive, five-passenger Saturn Aura Hybrid is an environmentally friendly sedan. Its electric motor assists the combustion engine during acceleration and allows the engine to shut off at a stop to save fuel. The vehicle is powered by a 164-horsepower 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine in conjunction with a regenerative nickel metal hydride battery pack mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. It is available in only eight states, including North Carolina.

"We were happy to provide Wake Tech with a hybrid Aura to show during their Automotive Technologies program tour," said Shotwell. "Their goal of establishing a green automotive degree program is admirable and in line with Saturn's mission of providing fuel-efficient vehicles."

Business spotlight - Fort Wayne Journal Gazette

Posted: 30 Aug 2009 12:03 AM PDT

Address: 160 W. Canal St., Wabash

At a glance: Oswalt-Thomas specializes in retail sales of tires, televisions and appliances. The second-generation business provides general automotive maintenance services. It also custom-installs home appliances.

Employees: Five, including president, Jack Thomas

Annual revenue: $1.4 million

When was the company founded: 1953

Biggest accomplishment in the past 12 months: "In December of 2008 we celebrated our 55th year anniversary (and) in spring of 2009 we were voted the best appliance dealer" by the readers of the Wabash Plain Dealer, Thomas said.

"It's always nice to be recognized by our customers as doing a good job for them," he said. "Because that's what's most important."

Thomas sees the mom-and-pop-type business's ability to compete with big-box chains and remain open through the years as no small feat either.

What are the key challenges facing your business or industry: "Of course the economy," Thomas said. But "I think more than that it would be controlling the cost of doing business. We're constantly looking for more efficient ways to operate, and I think that can never stop."

Customers and the bottom line depend on it.

"Cutting expenses and controlling costs is necessary to maintain good profit."

Thomas said he's able to compete on pricing with big-box stores that have "enormous" marketing capability and more buying power but higher overhead costs.

What are your growth projections for the next five years: He expects modest gains in the first year or so of 3 percent to 4 percent, increasing to "somewhere in the 10 percent range."

"I hope it is better than that," he said.

What's one thing about your business that people may not be aware of: Thomas says some people don't know that the store sells tires and provides automotive services. Others know Oswalt-Thomas does automotive but somehow are unaware it sells appliances and TVs.

Large store windows show off appliances of all kinds in the front showroom – refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers. Inside, televisions line one wall and tires another, behind which is the auto shop. It's all modeled after an old Goodyear store plan, Thomas said – before the company tightened its focus decades ago to tires and rubber.

But Thomas' father, the late Andrew Jackson Thomas, liked the variety of the old Goodyear-type shop, and his son has stuck with it.

"We never left it," Jack Thomas said.

Employees Aim for up to 5 Percent Stake in VW - ABC News

Posted: 29 Aug 2009 09:04 PM PDT

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - The roughly 370,000 employees of Volkswagen and Porsche are striving initially to acquire a stake of up to 5 percent in the automotive group, VW's labor chief told a German newspaper.

"I don't know how much we will end up with. It certainly won't be 10 percent overnight, but between one and five percent to begin with," Sueddeutsche Zeitung quoted Bernd Osterloh on Saturday as saying.

It was not clear yet how the employees would finance the purchase of their stake, the paper said.

Volkswagen -- Europe's biggest carmaker -- agreed to buy a 42 percent stake in the sports car unit of debt-ridden Porsche SE earlier this month.

It will pay up to 3.3 billion euros ($4.7 billion) this year for the initial stake in the unit, Porsche AG, paving the way for the creation of an "integrated" automotive group by the end of 2011.

To finance the purchase, Volkswagen plans a capital increase of preference shares in the first half of 2010.

Expectations/enrollment up at Career Academy - Highlands Today

Posted: 29 Aug 2009 09:04 PM PDT

Published: August 30, 2009

AVON PARK - Though admission standards were raised, enrollment is up a bit in the second year of the Career Academy at South Florida Community College.

Through the Career Academy at SFCC, School Board of Highlands County students earn their high school diploma and work toward a vocational certification (and possible college credit) at the same time.

The admission standards were boosted this year to not only require a C average, but also a Level 2 or higher in reading on the most recent Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.

Last year a 2.0 grade point average was required, but it was very flexible, Career Academy lead teacher Jennifer Westergom said Friday.

Also, the career academy offered a reading class last year so students could be at any level on the FCAT in reading.

"But this year, because we realized that the vocational textbooks reading level is quite high, we felt the kids needed to be a Level 2 reader," Westergom said.

Every time you toughen the application requirements then you have to work on recruitment again, she noted.

There were about twice as many applications compared to last year, she said. Enrollment ended up in the 60s this year, after the FCAT scores were released and it was determined who could be accommodated by the class schedule.

"We were actually very happy the way our enrollment ended up," she said. Last year's enrollment ended in the high 50s.

Wade Hodge, a senior from Avon Park High, is in his second year at the academy studying automotive collision repair.

Hodge said it's a two-year program, but he is taking a half-year during his school year.

After graduating high school he will have one more year to study the trade.

"Academically things are going good, Hodge said, I'm trying to keep my grades up and finish school."

New this year at the Career Academy - higher expectations, a lead teacher, an all new academic staff and allied health added to the list of programs.

With the tougher admission standards, Westergom said there are higher performance expectations of the students.

"All four of our academic teachers are veteran teachers from Highlands County, but new to the academy," Westergom said.

The turnover in teachers was due to a variety of reasons: retirement, voluntary relocation and nonrenewal to replace with a more experienced teacher, according to Westergom.

Westergom oversees the day-to-day operation of the academy, which is under Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum/Instruction Rebecca Fleck.

The past four years Westergom served as the district's math resource teacher. Prior to that she was a registrar at Avon Park High School.

The Career Academy teachers are: Margie Hulbert, English; Wendy Lee, social studies; Cheryl Moffat, science and Trish Preston, math.

To Career Academy at SFCC accepts students who qualify from 10th-, 11th-, or 12th grade.

The academy's programs include: air conditioning, refrigeration and heating; allied health; automotive collision repair; automotive service technology; computer electronics technology; drafting; food management, production and services, medical secretary; networking support services and secretarial/administrative assistant.
