Pro-Start Automotive opens in Monrovia - Frederick News-Post

Monrovia -- Donnie Hottinger has always been a car enthusiast. He races a car at 75-80 Dragway.

Hottinger is the owner of Pro-Start Automotive, 4937-C Green Valley Road.

Former owner of a glass shop for 24 years, Hottinger said his son, Daniel, will be doing the mechanical work.

Daniel Hottinger trained at the NASCAR Technical Institute for 1 1/2 years, worked for an engine-builder and a general auto repair shop.

He joins his father with more than five years of experience in auto repair and maintenance and is ASE certified.

The shop, which will be open 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, services all makes of domestic and imported autos, trucks and SUVs, Hottinger said.

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Rapidly evolving mobile phone technology, including smartphone applications, provide an opportunity for automotive marketers to establish a valuable online presence that customers believe they can't live without, according to industry experts at the 2009 J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Internet Roundtable.

A large and growing proportion of consumers in the U.S. have smartphone devices. Smartphone users tend to keep their devices in close proximity at all times and utilize them primarily as an extension of PC Internet usage. The uniquely interactive and portable nature of mobile devices provides marketers with new challenges and opportunities. While keeping pace with evolving mobile device technology requires ongoing investment, developing an engaging mobile Web presence may also bring considerable benefits.

"Mobile gives marketers the chance to reach more shoppers, more often, in more places and to push specific information to shoppers right up to the point of sale," said Jason Ezell, founder and national account director of Dealerskins. "If you can get into their circle of trust that is their mobile device, you have much more of a direct link to prospective customers from day one of shopping all the way to the day of purchase."

Experts at the conference offered the following strategies for optimizing mobile device marketing:

  • Information offered to consumers on their mobile devices needs to be both relevant and respectful. For vehicle shoppers with mobile devices, ad listings, payment calculators, maps and directions and dealer contact information are particularly useful.
  • The development of rich media allows use of video and scalable banner ads, which are particularly engaging to viewers.
  • To increase the chances that users will return to a mobile Web site, use consumer feedback to continually improve the mobile experience.
  • When integrated into an overall campaign, text messaging is a particularly effective as a reminder medium and for eliciting responses from mobile device users. For example, through using text messaging, automotive brands and dealers may be able to bring shoppers in for test drives at 15 percent of the cost of using traditional media.
  • When collecting e-mail addresses from vehicle shoppers, ask if the address is for a mobile device, in order to extend mobile-only offers and otherwise target mobile device users.

"Mobile is the connector that allows OEMs to take viewers from being passive to active," said Charlie Taylor, general manager, digital marketing and motorsports, at Volkswagen of America. "As the mobile device experience becomes richer, people decide they don't want to live without certain features or content from a brand, which creates a barrier to exit. We may see the development of more in-dash features that interface with mobile apps that keep owners engaged beyond the point of purchase."

Stackpole Introduces Low Profile Sulfur-Resistant Chip Resistor For Automotive Applications

Stackpole Electronics Inc. (SEI) states that it is providing circuit designers with a low-profile chip and sulfur-resistant properties – the new thin film RNCP Series resistors are said to offer twice the normal power rating compared to standard thick film technology. The elimination of silver and gold make the devices impervious to sulfur contamination and is said to reduce the cost to be within 10% of the cost of standard general-purpose thick film chips. For new designs, if a smaller case size can be used, the pricing is less than the traditional thick film solution. In addition, the RNCP Series does not have any lead-containing glass, making it RoHS-complaint without exemptions. Well suited for harsh environments and long-term reliability products, such as automotive applications, the RNCP Series is said to offer all of the advantages of thin film technology, including high power handling, high stability and low noise.

The RNCP Series offers durable, high-performance characteristics for automotive electronics including engine control units, gearbox controls, body electronics, safety systems, power supplies and braking systems. With the capability to withstand high temperatures and vibration, the RNCP Series meets all necessary automotive requirements and certifications.

"The thin film RNCP Series is a reliable alternative to high-power thick film resistive technology and is a lower cost alternative to conventional thin film chip resistors," said Kory Schroeder, Director of Marketing at SEI. "In addition, the anti-sulfur material extends the operating life of this already-rugged part, which is vital in applications where long term reliability is critical."

Featuring absolute tolerances to 1% and a TCR of 100ppm/°C, the RNCP Series resistors are available in 0402, 0603, 0805 and 1206 chip sizes, with power ratings from 0.1 to 0.5W and maximum working voltages from 50 to 200V.

The RNCP Series is available on standard 7-inch reels. Pricing varies with chip size, tolerance, and resistance value and ranges from around $1.00 per thousand to $10 per thousand in full reel quantities; contact Stackpole for volume pricing.
