A new automotive leader China surpasses the United States as top auto ... - Biloxi Sun Herald

Posted: 10 Dec 2009 09:01 PM PST

China has long been expected to overtake the U.S. since its population of 1.3 billion is more than quadruple that of the United States. But the increase in sales happened much faster than anyone expected because of China's tax cuts, its stimulus program and a depressed American market.

Two years ago, J.D. Power predicted China would pass the U.S. in 2025. Earlier this year, it forecast 2009 sales of just 9 million vehicles for China.

After a sharp slowdown in auto sales late last year, the Chinese government cut taxes on small cars and spent $730 million on subsidies to encourage sales of SUVs, pickups and minivans. A big stimulus program also boosted truck sales by pumping money into construction.

Auto sales were expected to rise with China's stimulus, but they have far exceeded expectations, said Jeff Schuster, J.D. Power's executive director of automotive forecasting.

Most experts think the top-sales title will shift back and forth between China and the United States for the next several years, with China ultimately prevailing.

Improving sales of autos and other big-ticket items is key to Beijing's strategy to promote stronger domestic consumption and lower dependence on exports.

"The government has sent a very clear message that they will not let the auto industry weaken, especially in 2010," say Jia Xinguang, chief analyst at China National Automotive Industry Consulting & Developing Corp.

Meanwhile, U.S. sales hit a 26-year low in early 2009 and remain well below the 17 million average from earlier this decade.

China's growing auto market is sure to affect the industry worldwide. Some key factors are:

n China's Car Pollution: It's gotten worse. China's fleet is newer, and big cities have imposed emissions standards that exceed those in the U.S., but lax enforcement of standards is a major problem. Vehicles may meet standards at first but then degrade over time.

Laid-off International Automotive Components employees get help - Canton Repository

Posted: 10 Dec 2009 09:30 PM PST

Trade Adjustment Assistance has been approved for former International Automotive Components Canton workers here who were laid off due to the company's shift to foreign production.

The plant on Seventh Street SW laid off 102 workers a year ago. The U.S. Department of Labor approved the assistance for the workers, who were involved in the production of car mats and sound insulation.

The assistance was created by Congress under the Trade Act of 1974, to help workers who lose their jobs due to U.S. trade deals with other countries, and who are hurt by foreign competition.

It provides benefits such as job-placement assistance, career counseling, occupational training, additional weeks of income support, and most relocation expenses for workers who find employment outside the area.

The approval came after a labor department investigation that found that a significant number of workers lost their jobs because the production of auto parts by IAC Canton decreased while competitive imports products increased, leading to job loss declines in sales and production at IAC Canton.

Dearborn, Mich.-based IAC was created in 2007 from pieces of Lear Corp. and the former Collins & Aikman Corp. Collins & Aikman declared bankruptcy in May 2005. It bought the former Akro Corp. plant here in the 1980s.

IAC ended up with 35 facilities, and company officials said last year it had to consolidate because it had too much production capacity for the North American automobile market.

Th!nk Resumes Production at Valmet Automotive Facility in Finland - All Cars Electric

Posted: 10 Dec 2009 01:59 PM PST

Think has finally resumed production of their Think City EV at a new manufacturing facility in Finland. Recently, both Ener1 and Valmet Automotive recapitalized Think to bring their vehicles back to the market. Ener1 supplies Think's battery packs, while Valmet Automotive assembles them at their manufacturing plant in Finland. Think's backlog of orders are expected to begin being filled before Christmas.

PRESS RELEASE:

THINK City production starts at new state-of-the-art facility in Finland.

THINK has re-started production of the THINK City model, one of the world's first urban EVs, at a state-of-the-art new facility with manufacturing partner Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki, Finland.

Valmet Automotive is a leading provider of engineering and manufacturing services to the automotive industry and recently became a THINK shareholder and strategic industrial partner. Today marks the start of production at Valmet Automotive's high-tech manufacturing base, which also produces Garia and Fisker alternative-fuel vehicles as well as Porsche AG's Boxster and Cayman.

The start of production at Valmet Automotive also marks a new start for THINK, which has made significant progress since announcing its re-capitalisation earlier this year with major new investors coming on board. In recent months THINK has made a series of senior executive appointments from the automotive and clean-tech industries, won major new contracts in the drivetrain supply business, started the roll-out of sales into key European markets and now, re-started production in Europe.

Richard Canny, THINK CEO, says: "This is a very significant day for THINK. We are back in production and I am so pleased that some of our very loyal customers can look forward to delivery of their long-awaited THINK City before Christmas. The order bank stands at around 2,300 vehicles, and our first priority is to deliver to these customers now that our vehicles are rolling off the production line again. Our next priority is to build on this order bank with continued expansion in Europe and around the world."

He added: "Our strategic alliance with Valmet Automotive is much more than just about assembly – we are already reaping the benefits of Valmet's expertise in manufacturing and engineering – with time being taken out of the production process, more manufacturing done on site and an overall more efficient industrial solution, from product development support right through to final assembly."

Ilpo Korhonen, President of Valmet Automotive, said: "Valmet already has expertise in the EV industry, but with the start of industrial production of the THINK City at our cutting-edge facilities in Finland, we aim to become a leader in the industry. The start of production is a very important step for both THINK and Valmet, and we aim to grow our strategic alliance alongside the growth of the THINK brand around Europe as more deliveries of the eagerly awaited THINK City are made in the coming weeks."

The THINK City is the world's first EV to be granted certification with the European CE conformity mark and EU homologation requirements (M1 certificate). Sales of the THINK City have started in selected key EV markets such as Austria, Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, with first fleet deliveries due to start before Christmas. The majority of THINK sales in these countries have been made to municipal authorities and utility partners, supported by government incentives.
