40 percent of vehicles rated over 30 mpg

TULSA, Okla., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc. (NYSE: DTG) today announced that it expects a significant improvement in the fuel efficiency of its fleet in 2010 based on its previously announced fleet diversification efforts. Over 40% of the Company's 2010 model year purchases have mile-per-gallon ratings (mpg) of over 30 mpg (highway), compared to about 10% of the Company's 2009 model year purchases. Additionally, the Company expects to realize over a 10% improvement in the fleet's average mileage, resulting in the Company's customers consuming approximately 13.5 million fewer gallons of gasoline on an annual basis and saving our customers over $35 million in fuel costs.

"As we provide our customers with vehicles that fully meet their needs, we are very pleased to also provide them lower fuel costs from our fleet's improved fuel efficiency," said Scott L. Thompson, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Our customers are value focused, and the Dollar and Thrifty brands continually strive to provide them with the best value for their dollar. This is just great news for our customers and it is certainly the right direction for our environment," said Thompson.

In October 2009, Dollar Thrifty announced that it had substantially diversified its fleet mix for 2010 model year vehicles across a wider range of vehicles and suppliers. Currently, the Company's 2010 fleet purchases are 34% Ford; 30% Chrysler; 20% General Motors; 6% Nissan; and 10% Hyundai and other manufacturers. This fleet diversification will mitigate the risks associated with a concentration of inventory from any single supplier, provide customers with a wider array of products to meet their individual needs, and improve the overall fuel efficiency of our fleet.

Among the eco-friendly vehicles new to Dollar Thrifty's fleet is the Ford Fusion, Motor Trend's "Car of the Year." The four-cylinder Fusion is the No.1-selling domestic car and America's most fuel-efficient midsize sedan with best-in-class highway fuel economy at 34 mpg.

Other vehicles prominent in the Company's fleet with high fuel economy (over 30 mpg) are the Chevy Malibu and Aveo, Nissan Versa and Hyundai Sonata.

The Company, based on customer demand, also maintains a full fleet of full-size cars, SUVs and vans.

Windsor, Alberta 12/16/2009 04:25 PM GMT (TransWorldNews)

GM identified Dutch luxury car maker Spyker as a possible buyer for its Saab unit, stating that if Spyker doesn't purchase the company, GM will do away with the Swedish brand by Dec. 31, according to Associated Press.

Chairman and interim CEO Ed Whitacre Jr. told reporters he has "a sense it's possible" that the Saab sale to Spyker could still go through.

Officials in Stockholm said work has begun to secure state-guaranteed loans for a possible sale of Saab, which employs about 4,500 people.

Hakan Lind, a spokesman at the Ministry of Enterprise, also confirmed that the European Investment Bank has been provided with the name of the potential contender for a loan.

Ever since the Koenigsegg Group consortium, which is led by a tiny Swedish sports car maker Koenigsegg, pulled out of its planned Saab purchase in November, speculation has been rampant about the future of the Swedish GM unit.

On Monday, China's Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings, originally part of the Koenigsegg consortium, announced it had agreed to buy technology from Saab. It gave no details of costs or timing of that purchase.

Spyker posted a loss of euro8.7 million in the first of 2009, compared to a euro8.6 million loss in the same period a year earlier. Sales fell 29 percent to euro4.1 million.

Magneti Marelli and TELIT Sign a Memorandum of Understanding in the Field of Telematics Devices for Automotive - Businesswire.com

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 03:56 PM PST

ROME--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Magneti Marelli and Telit Communications S.p.A. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the area of GSM and GPRS modules to be used on telematics devices in the automotive field.

The agreement aims at developing info-mobility and tracking functions and services, and specifically provides for Telit to supply Magneti Marelli with cellular M2M (machine-to-machine) modules to be fitted into telematics boxes for automotive use worldwide and in particular for Europe and Brazil.

The overall market in Brazil is estimated at six million units in 2010, driven by a mandate to track all cars, trucks and mobile goods in case of theft or other criminal acts.

The cooperation between Magneti Marelli and Telit originates from the partnership for the development of the first portable navigation device with high-speed data transfer (3G). Integrated with a high-speed modem 3G/HSDPA (7.2 Mb/s) and Internet browser, this navigation device allows vehicle occupants to surf the Internet in the same way as from a personal computer and to download Web content.

The GSM module is the system component that provides voice communication capabilities and internet connectivity to the car. The use of modules on platforms such as telematics boxes enables vehicle connectivity to communication networks and the exchange of information, ensuring mobile broadband connection during the trip.

Thanks to this connectivity, the telematics boxes allow a wide range of info-mobility services to be accessed from the vehicle: pay-per-use telematics insurance services, anti-robbery tracking and vehicle localization in case of theft, remote diagnostics for vehicle operation, company fleet management, emergency call (also known as E-call), information services on traffic and road conditions, information on access limits and bans, as well as in-vehicle multimedia entertainment services.

"Working with a partner like Telit assures the proper technological standard for wireless communication and connectivity modules, which are at the heart of our automotive info-mobility solutions and systems that aim to deliver the world of Internet, information and value-added functions and services to the vehicle," said Eugenio Razelli, CEO of Magneti Marelli.

"Our agreement formalizes the strong relationship we have been able to build with Magneti Marelli over the last years. Furthermore it shows Telit's commitment to Automotive customers supported by our innovative solutions and services," said Oozi Cats, CEO of the Telit Group.

Chinese automaker to buy Saab car, engine technology - Fort Wayne Journal Gazette

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 11:55 PM PST

SHANGHAI – Beijing Autos has agreed to buy technology from GM's Saab Automobile, a breakthrough for the Chinese automaker that could clear the way for General Motors Co. to sell the rest of Saab to another buyer.

An announcement Monday from state-owned Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings gave no details about the cost or timing of the acquisition of car and engine technology.

Beijing Autos, also known as BAIC, said it plans to buy the rights to some powertrain technology for Saab's 9-5 and 9-3 sedans, including engine and gearbox knowhow.

The production equipment used to make the 9-5 will be moved to China to produce BAIC cars, and Saab will help integrate the technology into the Chinese company's vehicles, the two sides said.

Saab will also support Beijing Auto's efforts to build its own car brands, using the Saab technology, the announcement said.

"This arrangement is excellent for both parties, now and for the future. We have developed a good relationship with BAIC and look forward to working with them to integrate this Saab technology into their future vehicles," Jan Ake Jonsson, managing director of Saab Automobile, said in a statement released by GM on Monday.

GM is also in talks with another buyer to sell the entire Saab brand, a person familiar with the negotiations said Sunday.

The sale of the technology to Beijing Autos will help Saab financially but won't hinder a deal to sell the Saab brand and its current production lines to another buyer, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the deals.

Beijing Autos has partnerships with Germany's Daimler AG and South Korea's Hyundai but makes only trucks under its own brand name.

The company still has to build up its own reputation and product line, analysts said.
