The Federal Government yesterday pledged to assist automotive plants with a view to revitalising them.

Mr Humphrey Abah, the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, made the pledge while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nnewi.

He spoke on the sidelines of the ongoing Second Nnewi International Auto Trade Fair holding between November 27 and December 7.

"Some automotive plants are already back on stream but many are still not operating. I believe that the others will be back in a short while,'' he said.

On lack of patronage of local automotive firms, the minister said Nigerian Automotive Manufacturers Association had been advised to scrutinise the budget to ascertain areas of vehicle procurement.

"We will help them to push for 100 per cent purchase of the vehicles locally.

"Where we can not have the capacity locally, we will make sure that at least 30 per cent requirement is met,'' he added. He said the Public Procurement Act requires that 30 per cent of all procurements must be given to locally produced goods ``where they are eligible''.

The minister described the Fair as a welcome development, saying`` we are showcasing our capabilities and abilities in the manufacturing sector.''

Emeka Ayabazu, the President, Nnewi Chamber of Commerce Industry, Mines and Agriculture, also told NAN that the Nnewi Auto Industrial Cluster developed out of trading in automobile spare parts. He said research findings showed that commercial activities in Nnewi constituted about 80 per cent of auto parts trade in the country.

Seventeen companies are participating at the fair, with manufacturers showcasing locally manufactured products such as brake pads, filters, break oil and engine oil.

The highlight of the fair was the presentation of the first made in Nigeria vehicles by Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company which displayed its jeep, buses and pick up trucks.

Why it is necessary to recycle Laptop battery - PRLog (free press release)

PR Log (Press Release)Dec 06, 2009 – Types and Uses of Household Batteries

Lead-Acid Automobile Batteries:
Nearly 90 percent of all lead-acid batteries are recycled. Almost any retailer that sells lead-acid batteries collects used batteries for recycling, as required by most state laws. Reclaimers crush batteries into nickel-sized pieces and separate the plastic components. They send the plastic to a reprocessor for manufacture into new plastic products and deliver purified lead to battery manufacturers and other industries. A typical lead-acid battery contains 60 to 80 percent recycled lead and plastic.

Household batteries - Dry-Cell Batteries:
Dry-cell batteries include alkaline and carbon zinc (9-volt, D, C, AA, AAA), mercuric-oxide (button, some cylindrical and rectangular) , silver-oxide and zinc-air (button), and lithium (9-volt, C, AA, coin, button, rechargeable) . On average, each person in the United States discards eight dry-cell batteries per year.

Non-Automotive Lead-Based Batteries:
Gel cells and sealed lead-acid batteries are commonly used to power industrial equipment, emergency lighting, and alarm systems. The same recycling process applies as with automotive batteries. An automotive store or a local waste agency may accept the batteries for recycling.

There are two types of batteries:

(1) primary — those that can not be reused, and

(2) secondary also called "rechargable" — those that can be reused.

Battery Facts and Stats:

Recycling and Disposal:
Mercury was phased out of certain types of batteries in conjunction with the "Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act," passed in 1996.
Recycling batteries keeps heavy metals out of landfills and the air. Recycling saves resources because recovered plastic and metals can be used to make new batteries.
Household batteries contribute many potentially hazardous compounds to the municipal solid waste stream, including zinc, lead, nickel, alkalines, manganese, cadmium, silver, and mercury.
In 1989, 621.2 tons of household batteries were disposed of in the US, that's double the amount discarded in 1970.
In 1986, 138,000 tons of lead-acid batteries were disposed of in the US
Regular flashlight batteries can be disposed of in the trash (generally, some states, like California, have more restrictive rules) , though it is best to take them to a recycler.
Mercury-oxide and silver-oxide button batteries are often collected by jewelers, pharmacies, and hearing-aid stores who sell them to companies that reclaim the metals.
In 1993, 80 to 95% of automobile batteries were recycled

Consumption:
Americans purchase nearly 3 billion dry-cell batteries every year to power radios, toys, cellular phones, watches, laptop computers, and portable power tools.
Inside a battery, heavy metals react with chemical electrolyte to produce the battery's power.
Wet-cell batteries, which contain a liquid electrolyte, commonly power automobiles, boats, or motorcycles.
Nearly 99 million wet-cell lead-acid car batteries are manufactured each year.
A car battery contains 18 pounds of lead and one pound of sulfuric acid.

Veteran Mercedes, BMW mechanic sets up shop in Fresno - Fresno Bee

Posted: 06 Dec 2009 07:40 PM PST

A budding rose

Even as she juggles school and baby-sitting jobs, 21-year-old entrepreneur Briana Kumpe is building her own business.

Kumpe is founder of briana rose, a maker of hair accessories. The items are crafted from starfish that are jeweled with Swarovski crystals. They are sold at The Spa at Fig Garden Village, and she had a show at Carmel Kids. Her work can also be found at brianarose.etsy.com.

Kumpe, a Fresno State student, is working on expanding her line of hair accessories into stores in the Midwest and Northern California.

"I really want to start branching out to other stores and developing other products," Kumpe said. "My goal is to develop enough demand where I will be able to hire additional staff."

Kumpe's business got a boost with a $5,000 scholarship to run her one-woman company in the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hatchery.

More cake

One Fresno catering business is growing, despite the economic downturn.

Marcy Lord started CakeWalk Fresno 15 years ago, catering bridal showers, parties and other events with dessert buffets.

When her husband's automotive business began to slow down during the recession, Lord decided to expand and offer meals about six months ago. She now caters events with full meals, box lunches and dinners for busy families.

She hopes to expand even more early next year with a storefront shop selling meals, possibly at the corner of Champlain Drive and Perrin Avenue.

The business joins other caterers who have survived the recession, including Pardini's Catering & Banquets, Grand Occasions Catering & Banquets, Love & Garlic and others.

Information is available on her Web site at www.CakeWalkFresno.com.
