| Tyler Automotive adds Kia brand in Niles - 22 WSBT Posted: 19 Dec 2009 08:22 PM PST NILES — For several months, auto dealerships here and across the country haven't had much to crow about. What with soft sales, the eventual departure of brands such as Pontiac, Saturn and Saab and even the elimination of dealerships by Chrysler and General Motors, the resiliency of those who have survived has certainly been tested. So it's understandable that Scott Tyler, a partner in Tyler Automotive with his brother Chris, was exuberant when discussing the new Kia vehicles he has just started receiving. Tyler said Kia, which is among the nation's fastest growing brands, will be offered at the GM/Hummer store at 1810 S. 11th St. He said sales, parts and service personnel have been in training to learn about the new brand. "We were really interested in adding an import," said Tyler. "We were looking for a brand that had a big upside. Kia was the most logical choice." While sales for most auto companies were down through November, Kia's U.S. sales were up 7 percent, said Tyler. "They build a quality, reliable product," he added. Even though permanent signage isn't yet installed and the staff is still "neck deep in training," the Tyler store expects the arrival of 115 new vehicles before Christmas. He said permanent signage should be installed within 30 to 60 days. Besides the Kia-GM-Hummer location, Tyler also operates a Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep store at 1102 S. 11th St. (Michigan 51) as well as Lake Michigan Honda at 2149 Napier Ave., Benton Harbor. Tyler purchased the Honda store about two years ago. The Kia brand is also sold by Gurley Leep Kia at 215 W. Douglas Road, Mishawaka. | Manufacturer on the rebound - Lafayette Journal and Courier Posted: 19 Dec 2009 10:52 PM PST At Lafayette's voestalpine Rotec, formerly Elmsteel Inc., business is on the rebound. "We are heavily influenced by the automotive sector. We've seen a very big increase since the beginning of the year," said president Andrew Ball. "There's been a strong rebound in manufacturing activity. Our business levels are what they were about 24 months ago." In 2010, Ball expects the business, which manufactures pieces for the automotive companies, to grow by 20 percent, bringing it in line with expectations set several years ago. "This year was a blip on the radar," he said. Voestalpine Rotec is still planning a $2.5 million equipment investment at the Lafayette site. Ball said decisions about additional hiring would be made after that new equipment is in place, likely in March. "Coming from where the economy and where the automotive sector was, we've had a lot of work we've had to do to get healthy," he said. "We're not fully healthy yet, which is why I'm tentatively answering questions about recruitment. "From all indications, we're seeing a gradual recovery." Company grateful for businessDave Kensinger has been grateful this year for steady business at Korschot's Heating and Air Conditioning in Lafayette. The company hasn't had to lay off workers, but it hasn't made any new hires either. "And we've put off price increases on servicing and installations," said Ken-singer, the service manager. Kensinger believes federal energy tax credits have spurred many people to upgrade their heating or cooling systems this year. Steve Clark, who lives south of Lafayette, is one such customer. "I'd have to say it was the tax credit" that helped with the decision, said Clark. "I've been thinking about doing this for a while, but 30 percent is a big credit." In many cases, Kensinger said, customers aren't making the decision to replace furnaces solely because of the tax credit. But when they do shop for a furnace, they're choosing higher efficiency -- and thus, more expensive -- models. "We're expecting that upturn in high-efficiency sales to continue at least until the end of 2010 because of the federal dollars available until (then)," Kensinger said. -- Dorothy Schneider/dschneider@jconline.com Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Auto woes aren't scaring everyone - Detroit Free Press Posted: 19 Dec 2009 11:56 PM PST BY JEWEL GOPWANI Detroit's automakers were swatting away the word "bankruptcy" and watching their sales tumble in late summer of 2008, just as Kimberly Hewlett wrapped up an internship at General Motors and started her third year as an automotive design student. Even as some of the auto industry's most challenging times followed, Hewlett, a student at the College for Creative Studies, didn't veer from her goal to design cars and trucks. Despite financial instability and chronic job losses in Michigan's automotive sector, many people like Hewlett see a future in the auto industry. "I just don't feel you should run away when something looks bad," said Hewlett, 22, of Southfield, who has several relatives who have worked in auto plants. There's no question that the state has been hammered by the auto industry's troubles. As auto sales among GM, Ford and Chrysler grew in the 1990s, Michigan gained nearly 800,000 jobs. As Detroit Three sales declined, the state lost two-thirds of those jobs by the end of 2008. The rest, and 127,000 more, will be gone by 2011, according to an analysis by the University of Michigan. The industry's bleak state and outlook have prompted many people who remain employed at automakers and suppliers to seek new careers. Josh Thurber, a vehicle designer at GM, said he has worried about being laid off. But that fear made him work harder. It didn't send him looking for another career. "It's just so much a part of who I am, being a car designer," said Thurber, 35, of New Baltimore. While in college at Brigham Young University, Thurber dropped his liberal arts classes when a friend told him that his school offered an industrial design program. "When you're here and you're immersed in the future of the company, it's hard not to be optimistic about what we're doing," Thurber said about working in GM's design studio. Andrew Rohr probably could have found work at Caterpillar or John Deere, companies where he had interned recently. But instead, the 23-year-old engineer held out for a job in the auto industry. So far, so good. Rohr has lined up a job at GM, where he is to work on regenerative braking, using the skills he learned at Michigan Technological University and in the University of Michigan's energy systems engineering master's program, which he is to complete in the spring. "It was a difficult decision to pursue the automotive industry," Rohr said. "I started leaning toward different sectors because I wasn't so sure about job security." It was after an internship last summer at GM, where Rohr worked on testing the Chevrolet Volt, that he decided to take the leap into the auto industry. "There's a lot of challenges and a lot of opportunities to look forward and to innovate," he said. Michael Mihelich knows what it's like to leave an industry that's in trouble. Before finding an engineering job at Chrysler in 1991, Mihelich left Boeing, where he worked on testing the 747-400. Mihelich left when he worried about being laid off. "I was a young engineer there. I saw the writing on the wall," he said. Shortly after Mihelich left Boeing, many of his peers were laid off. During his years at Chrysler, Mihelich has tried to prove his worth by working in several areas, including body engineering, public relations and quality management. He also earned a master of business administration from Oakland University. "I tried to put myself in places where I wasn't vulnerable to layoffs," said Mihelich, now a program manager on the Fiat 500. It will take years for Michigan to win back the automotive jobs it has lost in the last decade. But there are bright spots on the horizon, as GM plans to make battery packs for the Volt in Brownstown Township and Ford retools a truck plant in Wayne to build the Focus. Ann Marie Sastry, head of Rohr's master's program in energy systems, said Michiganders have the skills to lead the industry's turnaround. "The elements that made Michigan a great place to locate the auto industry," Sastry said, "are also still the elements that make Michigan a great place to locate Auto 2.0." As they embark on their careers, Hewlett and Rohr are realistic. Hewlett said if she's unable to find a design job at an automaker, she would be satisfied with starting her career at a design contract house as a way to get her foot in the door. Rohr said he wants to stay in the auto industry but understands if he has to move into another field. "If it doesn't work out in the future," Rohr said, "I won't regret the decision to go work for the auto industry because that's what I'm passionate about."
