"This means a loss for the global market during this period that is equivalent to an entire calendar year," said senior VW manager and former head of group sales Detlef Wittig in a letter presented to VW's executive board. "This effect would lead to sustainably lower group deliveries to customers versus the previous plan, and as a result to a lower financial result," he went on to explain.
Automotive News' German-language newspaper did not cite a specific reason for the revision, but many carmakers have had to retreat from previously ambitious retail sales targets following the economic crisis. According to the report, Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn stuck to his target of surpassing Toyota as the world's largest carmaker by 2018. Volkswagen could not be reached for a comment. | Ford Fusion Narrowly Beats Toyota Prius as Edmunds.com Visitors ... - Consumer Electronics Net Posted: 22 Jan 2010 07:31 AM PST January 22, 2010 -- SANTA MONICA, Calif., BUSINESS WIRE --Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, recently announced the results of the Consumers' Favorites hybrid vehicle survey. At the top of the list was the Ford Fusion Hybrid with 26 percent of the votes, closely followed by the Toyota Prius with 23 percent. 'Ford's mid-sized hybrid sedan, which helped boost Ford's overall sales performance in an otherwise dismal 2009, has been praised for its smooth operation, fuel economy, looks and interactive information system that helps drivers modify their behind-the-wheel behavior to increase fuel economy,' according to Edmunds' GreenCarAdvisor.com Senior Editor John O'Dell. Last week the Fusion Hybrid won the 2010 North American Car of the Year. Karl Brauer, Editor in Chief of Edmunds.com, was one of the 49 journalists on the jury. Recognizing the significance of the vehicle in the marketplace, Brauer recently helped to select it for inclusion in the Edmunds.com long-term test fleet; it is being reported on at http://blogs.insideline.com/roadtests/Vehicles/2010-ford-fusion-hybrid/ 'Coming in second in our survey, the Toyota Prius benefited from its combination of incredible fuel mileage, a spacious cabin and a versatile hatchback body style. The Honda Insight finished a commendable third place; that's rather impressive considering that this practical four-door hatchback was the least expensive candidate on the ballot,' noted Brauer. The ranking of hybrid cars among Edmunds.com visitors is:

| Auto industry leads jump in wholesale sales: StatsCan - Ottawa Sun Posted: 21 Jan 2010 11:00 AM PST Gains in the automotive products sector in Ontario were the main catalyst for a 3.5% jump in wholesale sales in the province in November. According to Statistics Canada, $21.7 billion in sales were recorded making it the most robust month since September 2008. Nationally, wholesale numbers gained 2.5% in November to $42.4 billion, the fifth increase in six months. In volume terms, wholesale sales were up 2.1%. During that period, Canadian wholesalers regained one-third of the losses incurred since the last peak in July 2008. November's solid growth was the result of widespread gains, with six of the seven sectors reporting increased sales. The automotive products sector contributed the most to the rise in November, followed by the food, beverages and tobacco products sector. Sales in the automotive products sector rose 7.8% in November to $7.3 billion, the eighth increase since the beginning of 2009. The Stat Can report said it benefited from strong sales in the motor vehicles trade group, reflecting the strength of Canadian imports. According to the latest Canadian international merchandise trade release, Canadian imports of automotive products rose 9.4% in November, mainly due to increased imports of trucks and other motor vehicles. The food, beverages and tobacco products sector at 2.5% also contributed to the growth in wholesale sales. Except for Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, all Canadian provinces posted increased wholesale sales in November. However, Ontario and Quebec were the main contributors to this growth. I bet you those 'stats' are cooked up by the government to make it 'look good'.
I pass by at least 5 car dealerships everyday and they`re always as empty as a Stephen Harper Fan Club.
